survival tips for future sspers Bring a walkman and don't trust the radio stations. Remember extra batteries. Money has no value if there's nothing to spend it on. Bring a ball - the celestial sphere makes a lot more sense if you actually have a sphere. Bring extra binder paper. Bring extra extra binder paper. Bring some extra disks - they'll give you enough to be efficient, but it's so much more fun to be inefficient and save everything. Don't expect to get any homework done. Bring a couple good books you want to read, not just ones you have to read. Good food is a form of currency. Extra computing and typing surfaces may become necessary, so a laptop isn't a completely wacko idea. Debugging takes ten times as long as actually writing the damn code in the first place. The 6am club isn't a myth. Sleeping in class is a necessary evil, but try to put it off as long as possible. Get use to the ants, and try not to find tarantulas too adorable. Bring a lot of phone cards; it's better to have too many than too few. Bring headphones: music while programming is necessary, but your companions might not love your music as much as you do. Have fun, sleep well, and try not to get lost.
color of my ssp shirt As I designed it, my entire family now sports SSP shirts of different colours. My father's is white, my mother's black, my big brother's turquoise...
awards/honors/leadership positions Most important: chair of Marin County Youth Commission, head of youth involvement in local government

possible major/career "I have every intention of building low-g rock sculptures on the moon one day."
favorite bookstore Acres of Books in Long Beach, CA. At least an acre of used books on every subject I could think of by every author I thought to look for... An entire diplomacy room, a section of old space shuttle operation manuals, a copy of Donald Jack's bandy papers...
most treasured book collection Ernie Pyle's collected writings. So far I have Homecountry, a collection of his depression-era writings about his travels around the continent, Here Is Your War, his columns of WWII african front writings, and a first edition copy of Last Chapter, writings about the pacific front. The only one I'm missing is Brave Men (invasion of Europe), then I'm set. Anyone who's interested in journalism should study Ernie Pyle, as should anyone interested in his part of history.
